For the second time in three months, we went to see the Bootleg Beatles, the world’s first ever tribute band. They’ve been going since 1980, far longer than the Beatles were together. Almost everyone likes the Beatles, or at least one of the various phases of the band. The Bootlegs cover all phases, starting off with the mop-top “She Loves You” era and ending up as hairy, denim-clad post-hippies. They are remarkably authentic, from the sound, the look, the wisecracks and even the way they move around the stage- they have obviously researched their art well. The Beatles split up in 1970, so we are talking almost 40 years- few if any of the audience at the Alban Arena, St.Albans, would have seen the Beatles in action, but the Bootlegs really take you back to that era. The Beatles were a one-off, they were the forerunners – of virtually everything. They “pushed the envelope”!
My sons both love the Beatles, even my 12 year-old academic who claims they are his second favourite band after Bon Jovi. He even resembles a Yoko Ono-era Lennon with his long hair and specs. “It’s good to see so many youngsters here,” cracked Bootleg John. “Our music could live on for another 100 years.” How right he is..
