A problem is only a problem..
While I have been worrying about what the future holds for our department at work, I only have to think about the current plight of my sister-in-law to realise that – to quote another friend of mine – “a problem’s only a problem if you let it be one”. She has terminal cancer and she’s in her early 40s. I may be concerned about a slightly difficult future and she has no future. So, should I worry about the work situation? I should naturally be concerned as there is a chance of (a) redundancy or (b) a change in role. As I am approaching the 50 mark, the EU legislation regarding ageism may give me some breathing space, particularly as it may take some time to restructure, regroup or even swing the axe. I am perhaps being melodramatic – I am after all something of a drama queen – and I may also be taking the worst-case scenario. But I have to put things into perspective and realise that there are many people worse off than myself and I have a certain degree of market value. I know someone who would swap places right away…
