Why I need London

Having spent the best part of a week in Hitchin and part of Sunday pottering around the garden, I am starting to change my view on retirement. On Friday, I spent no less than five hours wandering around my adopted home town of almost 20 years, I like very much. But it is small and I have to admit that by the time I had finished, I was getting a bit of island fever. Library, bank, dry-cleaners, haircut - a morning of errands. Is this what people who work and live locally do?
I even went for a cup of tea and a tea cake at the Triangle Café, which was, according to the menu, Hertfordshire’s Café of the Year. It was better than the commoditised approach of Starbucks and Café Nero, but the clientele said it all- blue rinses all round. There is a certain quaintness to all this, but it also made be wonder if Hitchin will be stimulating enough when I retire from full-time work?
