I went to the new Wembley Stadium for the first cup final to be held there- the FA Trophy between Stevenage Borough and Kidderminster Harriers. Given that Stevenage were once the arch-rivals of Hitchin Town (my club), I had mixed feelings about who I wanted to win. The new stadium, despite all its hype, is spectacular- one of those rare moments when things actually lived up to their billing.
I recall the old stadium as a dump- an odour that was a heady mixture of urine, cigarettes, beer and boiled onions. The new stadium is certainly an improvement. Access to the stadium is better, far better in fact. There are dozens of toilets and clean ones at that. But the concessions are a rip-off- £7 for fish and chips and £ 3.50 for a beer. Fans are being asked to pay Michelin star prices!
The game itself was brilliant. Kidderminster went 2-0 up in the first half, Stevenage came back to eventually win 3-2. The new town will be celebrating this weekend.
This is my first trip- my second is the FA Cup final on May 19- Chelsea v Manchester United- now you’re talking!
